Occasionally many of us experience muscle pain of some sort: spasms, tension and cramping. Whether it is due to an injury, trauma, or overuse, your muscles will go into overdrive trying to protect your body. But did you know that these can all be relieved with something called Trigger Point Injections (TPSIs)?
How it works
Trigger points are painful “knots” in your muscles. They form when a muscle can't relax. A trigger point injection can help soothe muscle pain, especially in your arms, legs, lower back and neck. TPIs are an effective, quick, safe and minimally invasive solution used to treat a variety of pain syndromes. Medication is injected into the trigger point, located in any muscle group throughout the body, using a very fine needle.
Musculoskeletal Pain
The causes of musculoskeletal pain are varied. Muscle tissue can be damaged with the wear and tear of daily activities. Trauma to an area (jerking movements, auto accidents, falls, fractures, sprains, dislocations, and direct blows to the muscle) also cause musculoskeletal pain. Other causes of pain include postural strain, repetitive movements, overuse, and prolonged immobilization.
Medication and treatment offered
Treatments only take a few minutes and the area can be numbed with topical anesthetics beforehand to reduce discomfort. Injections can be done as often as every 10 days.
Although corticosteroid is often used to reduce inflammation, we at BeaYOUtiful Health & Wellness do not regularly use corticosteroids due to its long term effects. Instead, we use an anesthetic to numb the muscle, which in turn soothes the muscle and helps it to relax. In some cases, depending on the severity, we will use a small amount of corticosteroids in conjunction with the anesthetic. This reduces excessive inflammation and allows the muscle to relax and recover.
There are some cases, however, where we use no medication at all. Call us today to see if trigger point injection is the right choice for you.
